Walter Murray Shipmate of the Month

After serving in the U.S. Army 1961-1963 on active duty in the Military Police , Walter was called back to serve in the U.S Army Reserve 1965-1968

Walter worked for the New York Telephone Company as a Central Office technician and then a field technician as an installer. He progressed to install & maintain large business telephone systems in the New York City area mainly in the Madison Square Garden complex servicing  large customers, IBM, Merrill Lynch, CBS, Penn Central Rail Road & Madison Square Garden.

After AT&T divesture (1984) of local telephone companies Walter migrated to AT&T as a field engineer maintaining various telephone systems. In 1988 he transferred into AT&T computer systems where he installed and maintained various computer systems, mainly working with UNIX systems in the New York & New Jersey areas. His responsibilities also took him to Atlanta, Denver, San Francisco and various other cities.

Walter retired from AT&T in 2000 and was immediately hired by Verizon. He worked in midtown Manhattan dedicated to NBC at 30 Rockefeller Plaza as a field engineer and Verizon laison. His responsibilities were to maintain & monitor various types of data , voice & video circuits.

He retired from Verizon in 2005 after having worked a total 42 years in the Telephone Communications business.

After retirement Walter moved down to Clearwater Florida where he attended a Boating Skills & Seamanship recommended by his nephew who was a friend of Buddy Casale's son. Buddy was an instructor in the class. He was invited to join the Coast Guard Auxilary in 2005 and the rest is history.

He served as the FSO-CM for Flotilla 11-10 and SO-CM for Division 11. He presently serves as the FSO-CS and FSO-IS in Flotilla 11-10 which keeps him busy in addition to serving as crew and TCO (watch-stander).duties.
